What Is a Canned Motor Pump?

A canned motor pump is a seal-less pump in which the centrifugal pump and electric motor are integrated into one hermetically enclosed unit. Because there is no rotating shaft passing through the pressure boundary, a conventional shaft seal is not required.

How It Works

The rotor operates inside the pumped-liquid side of the motor while the stator winding is isolated by a thin corrosion-resistant stator liner. Depending on the pump design, part of the process liquid circulates through the motor section to lubricate the bearings and remove heat before returning to the pump circuit.

Why Use a Canned Motor Pump?

  • Seal-less, leak-free construction
  • Suitable for hazardous, toxic, volatile or valuable fluids
  • Compact integrated pump and motor design
  • No conventional mechanical shaft seal to maintain
  • Available in standard, high-temperature, multistage, slurry and other application-specific configurations

Selection Still Depends on the Application

Fluid properties, temperature, pressure, viscosity, vapor pressure, solids content, NPSHA, required flow and head all affect the correct design. YUEMAX reviews these conditions before recommending a model or replacement solution.
