Correct canned motor pump selection depends on much more than flow and head. Because the pumped liquid also affects bearing lubrication, motor cooling, vapor formation, materials and internal circulation, the process data should be reviewed as a complete system before a model is confirmed.
1. Hydraulic Duty
The starting point is the required operating point. Please provide the normal and maximum flow rate, total head or suction/discharge pressure, system pressure and operating pattern.
- Flow rate: normal, minimum and maximum where available
- Head / differential pressure: required at the rated operating point
- Suction pressure: especially important for volatile or low-temperature liquids
- NPSHA: used to check cavitation margin
- Operating mode: continuous, intermittent, batch or standby service
For general reference, YUEMAX canned motor pump supply covers duties up to approximately 300 m³/h and heads up to approximately 420 m, depending on pump type and service conditions. See our performance range and application limits.
2. Fluid Properties
The fluid determines whether a standard design is suitable or whether a high-temperature, slurry, reverse-circulation or other configuration is needed.
- Fluid name, composition and concentration
- Operating and design temperature
- Density and viscosity
- Vapor pressure
- Corrosiveness
- Solids concentration and particle size
- Crystallization or freezing tendency
For examples of media commonly evaluated for canned motor pump service, see Fluids Handled by YUEMAX Canned Motor Pumps.
3. Material Selection
Wetted materials must be compatible with the fluid and temperature. Depending on the application, material options may include SUS304, SUS316L, HC-276 and duplex 2205. Bearing materials can include graphite, antimony carbon and SSiC. Shaft sleeves and thrust components may use wear-resistant surfaces such as tungsten carbide or Stellite where required.
4. Electrical & Installation Data
- Voltage, phase and frequency
- 50 Hz or 60 Hz operation
- Installation orientation
- Flange standard and nozzle size
- Hazardous-area requirements, if applicable
- Available installation dimensions for replacement projects
For replacement work, the original nameplate, GA drawing and installation dimensions are especially useful because hydraulic performance alone does not confirm interchangeability.
5. Documents Used for Final Selection
After the duty is confirmed, a technical review normally includes the pump datasheet, GA drawing, H-Q curve, efficiency curve, NPSH data, power curve and material information. These documents help confirm both hydraulic performance and installation compatibility before production.
Quick Selection Checklist
Before requesting a quotation, prepare the following: flow, head, fluid, temperature, density, viscosity, vapor pressure, suction pressure, discharge pressure, NPSHA, solids/particle size, materials, voltage/frequency and installation dimensions.
If some data is unavailable, send the original pump model, nameplate and photos first. YUEMAX can help identify what additional information is needed.
